I learned about these when I worked for the Census Bureau. (BTW, I’m out of state.) Townships have become little more than jobs programs for politicians. Many are too small to have full-time employees, so they have to pool resources. They maintain essentially duplicative buildings. Abolish them and assign their duties to the counties. This will reduce the total cost of government. This is especially important in light Illinois’ government finance problems. Outside of the politicians who lose jobs, the ill effects will be minimal.
