The Young Forwardists Committee’s Civic Engagement Policy Initiative guides high school students through the policy writing process to bring needed change to their local communities. The inaugural initiative works with a select group of New Jersey recruits and will spread to YF chapters in the fall. Project “fellows” meet once a week for an educational lesson on state-level policy writing. Then, fellows collaborate in distinct teams to develop their own policies. The initiative is sponsoring two student-written bills: “Accessibility in Domestic Abuse Shelters” and “Amending the Elections Transparency Act”. After finalizing bill language by late July, fellows will meet with town, county, and statewide representatives to advance their bills. This initiative pioneers YF policy writing while empowering FWD youth to create concrete change in local communities.

Former NJ Governor and Forward Party Co-Founder, Christine Todd Whitman, will deliver a 30-minute address and Q&A session with student fellows. She will share her insights regarding the statewide policy process, tips and tricks for writing policy, her experience governing New Jersey, and how she would approach New Jersey’s issues today through policy.
