When you go to the polls in New York on November 8, 2022 you will notice something very different from past years. You will only have two choices for Governor - a Democrat or Republican. Most of the third parties have been eliminated in New York State and the two remaining third parties did not run their own candidates and cross-endorsed.

Forward NY will be working on election reform efforts in New York State. While there are many issues that need fixing, our primary focus for the next year will be ballot access.

NYS restricted access to political parties and ballot lines under Governor Cuomo. Political parties previously needed to earn 50,000 votes on a gubernatorial line in order to gain official party status. Now, this threshold must be met on a presidential line two years later. This change eliminated the Independence, Libertarian, Green and SAM party in NY. The number of votes needed in gubernatorial and presidential elections for third parties to qualify for ballot access was increased from 50,000 to 130,000. The changes also made it much harder for independent candidates to petition their way onto the ballot, tripling the minimum number of signatures needed from 15,000 to 45,000 and moving the time for petitioning to the middle of winter.

New York’s ballot access requirements are now among the most stringent in the nation. FORWARD NY is kicking off its election reform initiatives in New York State and want to hear from you. Join us on November 7th to learn more about this effort!
