Join the Young Forwardists team at 7:00 PM EST/4:00 PM PST for an exclusive Civic Engagement opportunity!  As our political divisions continue to grow, it's up to every student at every high school and college to lead the charge toward change, starting with local ordinance and political engagement! This meeting will establish some ways that you can get involved locally, in your state, and nationally.

WEEK 3 (6/5) - Let's Talk: “How can we reduce the cost of legislation? What are some methods and case studies?”

Brainstorm: What are ways we can minimize cost while maximizing our policy’s impact?

Run of Show:

  1. Talk through crucial ways we can make our legislation most feasible and maintain its effectiveness.

  2. Break into teams and discuss ways to better address our policy problem.

  3.

    • Bike lanes and pedestrian safety: Shubh and Rydham
    • Shelters for domestic violence victims: Anaisha, Adi, Jessica, and Nidhi
  4. Come back together as a full group and discuss.

  5. Reminders and closing notes.

GROUP DELIVERABLE DUE BEFORE 6/5:

  1. Join the GroupMe: groupme.com/join_group/107914317/x5fcXFGT
  2. On the shared document I shared with you and your team, complete the following:
  • Identify your form of legislation.
    • Is this an ordinance, amendment, signed statement, resolution, etc.
  • Describe in a few sentences what your policy does.
    • What EXACTLY are you doing with your policy?
    • Example - Plastic Bag Ban: No restaurant, food business, grocery store shall provide or sell single-use plastic bags.
  • Why is this your policy solution? What is the impact of this solution?
    • Think about the benefits and drawbacks of your solution; How will this help solve your policy problem?
  • What ways can we ensure the policy is enforced and maintained?
    • What governing body is overseeing the implementation? What control do they have?
    • Example: According to Somerville's municipal code which lists every organized body's role and duty, the Environmental Commission is required to make recommendations to the Borough regarding the environment. The Environmental Commission can be an enforcement mechanism for environmental policies.
