I do believe that our problem is that we have always tried to find solutions by backing Messiahs. What history teaches us is that, to escape that loop of disappointment where we get mediocre/weak leaders followed by far-right bigots and then again by mediocre/weak leaders, we have to start with ideas, a range of ideas between the rational right and the rational left, and push leaders with those ideas.
When FDR's supporters demanded Roosevelt fulfill his promises regarding Social Security, according to one account he told them "You have to push me." And they pushed him and we got Social Security. Notice that they were not demanding some generic safety network program. They were specifically demanding Social Security.

Also, notice that by the time the primaries come, it's already too late. A project like this needs to be launched right now.
