Why is a new party the answer?
Americans deserve more than two outdated choices. The major parties are taking this country backward, and Democrats and Republicans have been unable to overcome extremists. To move forward, we don’t just need a new party but a new kind of party – a unifying, anti-extremist party that gets things done. That’s why we’re building Forward.
-
Who's calling for this?
You! Or at least the majority of you. Voter frustration with the political system is at an all-time high, with half of Americans (50%) now saying they are no longer members of either major party. Nearly two-thirds (63%) of voters want a new party and would vote for it.
-
How will Forward be different from other parties?
We are working to build the first “open party” – a place that celebrates diverse viewpoints and creativity – welcoming Democrats, Republicans, and Independents who are committed to rejecting the extremes and solving problems.
Other parties are more interested in partisan fights than governing. We are focused on doing, not dividing. -
What about all the failed third parties in the past?
Times have changed. People are demanding a new option. Unlike small parties that have been formed around narrow worldviews, we are focusing on what brings the majority of us together – a political system that fixes our problems instead of giving us headaches.
-
Is this all about the 2024 presidential election?
No. There are 500,000+ elected positions in the United States. Most of those races are uncontested, even though they have the most impact on the everyday lives of Americans. Mayors, council members, school boards. While we won’t shy away from big national races, our focus is on winning seats like these to change the course of our country. This is not an effort to run a presidential candidate in 2024, and no one on the Forward team is currently planning to run for president. This is an effort to build a viable, credible, and durable national political party.
"This is about so much more than the presidential race. While I don't plan to be a candidate in 2024, I do plan to recruit new leaders at all levels to move the country Forward." — Andrew Yang
-
Won’t you be a spoiler?
The system is already spoiled. Over 70% of elected positions have only one candidate competing for them, and the two major parties have shut out competition. We’ll fix that by bringing choice back to the American people, including through electoral reforms like ranked-choice voting and open primaries.
-
What are your short-term and long-term goals?
This year and next, we’ll be focused on building – that means expanding our infrastructure nationwide and getting communities involved. By the end of 2023, we’ll have ballot access and candidates in races around the country. By the end of 2024, we’ll have organizations in all 50 states and several thousand elected officials. Forward leaders will spend the 2020s and beyond working to repair America’s broken political system.
-
Who will be leading this newly combined organization?
Maybe you! We’re creating an innovative, growing organization. Already we can count among our number former governors, congress members, presidential candidates, business leaders, grassroots reformers, and concerned Americans. As the Forward Party expands, we will be excited to announce new national leaders, candidates, and staff.
-
What do you stand for? Do you have a platform?
Forward is steering away from far fringes of the Left and Right to find the common ground. That approach can solve almost every problem. Really. Anyone who is willing to work together to solve problems fits in the Forward Party. Three overarching priorities will unite the broad coalition we are building:
- Free People: Revitalize a culture that celebrates difference and individual choice, rejects hate, and removes barriers so that each of us can rise to our full potential.
- Thriving Communities: Reinvigorate a fair, flourishing economy and open society where everyone can live a good life and is safe in the places where we learn, work, and live.
- Vibrant Democracy: Reform our republic to give Americans more choices in elections, more confidence in a government that works, and more say in our future.
-
Does that mean my Forward candidate could disagree with other Forward candidates?
Yes. If you want a party that tells you how to think, there are other options out there. If you want a party that celebrates an open debate of ideas, then come join us.
-
How are you funded?
This is a people-powered movement. Supporters of all means are essential to fulfilling this mission (and since we don’t have a platform written by DC insiders, you can be sure that special interest groups aren’t steering the Forward Party in their favor).
From the donations that enable our work to the volunteers who knock doors and organize meet-ups, we need you. Come help us move America Forward.
